In connection with the Rs173 million cryptocurrency scandal case, a Karachi court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Waqar Zaka, a television host and social media activist.
The warrant was issued earlier in the day by a judicial magistrate after hearing the case filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) based on a Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU) report. Zaka, who campaigns for virtual currencies to be accepted as legal tender in Pakistan, failed to appear in court, resulting in the warrants.
According to the FIA, he has an aggregate debt of Rs87.1 million and a credit of Rs86.1 million in his bank account during the past three years. Several transactions were also made from overseas.
He told the media that his entire wealth was declared to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), but claimed that the FIA Cyber Crime was trying to prove that the money brought to Pakistan was illegal.
He questioned whether money launderers used banking channels to bring their money to Pakistan. It was transferred through remittances via foreign banking channels, he said.
