B-Town superstar Aamir Khan and filmmaker Kiran Rao have announced their divorce after 15 years of marriage in a joint statement. The couple said that they will co-parent their son, Azad Rao Khan.
Khan, 56, and Rao, 47, first met on the sets of the actor’s 2001 blockbuster movie Lagaan. The two got married in December 2005. They welcomed their son Azad Rao Khan in December 2011.
“In these 15 beautiful years together we have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy, and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect, and love. Now we would like to begin a new chapter in our lives – no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other.” The statement came in on Saturday morning.
“We began a planned separation some time ago, and now feel comfortable to formalize this arrangement, of living separately yet sharing our lives the way an extended family does,” the statement read. The two also said that they will continue to work for their NGO Paani Foundation. In addition to this, they will keep collaborating in movies, and other professional projects.
‘The start of a new journey’
“A big thank you to our families and friends for their constant support and understanding about this evolution in our relationship, and without whom we would not have been so secure in taking this leap,” the statement further read. “We request our well-wishers for good wishes and blessings, and hope that – like us – you will see this divorce not as an end, but as the start of a new journey.”
On the work front, Khan will be next seen in Laal Singh Chadha, an official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ acclaimed movie Forrest Gump. Interestingly, the film is being produced by Rao, who has also backed several others films, including Dangal and Secret Superstar.
Khan, the star of acclaimed films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Sarfarosh, 3 Idiots, Talaash, and Dangal, was previously married to Reena Dutta. They have two children – son Junaid Khan and daughter Ira Khan.
A while ago, the Taare Zameern Par actor’s daughter Ira Khan opened up about her battle with depression and being harassed. In a video, she made a shocking revelation about her experiences with depression and sexual harassment as a teenager. Ira revealed that she faced sexual abuse at the age of 14. That too, by someone she ‘kind of knew’.
In addition to that, she previously also spoke about sexual abuse in the context of her fight with clinical depression. She counted the three major life experiences that had an impact on her.
