Actor Zoya Nasir has called off her engagement with German influencer Christian Betzmann. The decision seemingly came after the latter caused an uproar on social media after he shared his take on Israel’s genocide against Palestine, and degradation of Pakistan
Taking to Instagram, Nasir shared, “It’s with a heavy heart I’m announcing that Christian Betzmann and I are no longer engaged to be married. His sudden change in stance towards my culture, my country, my people, and insensitivity towards my religion has led me to take this difficult and irrevocable decision.”
“There are certain religious and social boundaries that can’t be crossed no matter what, hence, the decision to part ways,” she added. “Humility, tolerance, and respect towards each other are the virtues that we must always adhere to. I look upon my Allah to provide me with the strength to deal with this worldly emotional wreck.”
“I wish Chris a bright and happy future. I sincerely request space and privacy for myself and my family as we begin to navigate this emotional turmoil,” the Deewangi actor concluded.
It may be recalled that Betzmann’s two cents on the Israel-Palestine issue had been criticized heavily by social media users.
Christian Betzmann’s controversial take on Palestinian issue
The recent spate of Israeli oppression prompted many celebrities to call Israel out for its inhumane treatment of Palestinians. Betzmann also took to Instagram earlier this week, but to the disappointment of his followers.
He shared how raising a voice on social media was of no help. Instagram user Meowznah reshared Betzmann’s story, which read, “Social media will never win against government and politics.”
“Sharing something which is all over mainstream media won’t make any difference,” he said, before talking about raising money for clean drinking water in Pakistan and how that did not make it to the news.
In the most incriminating part of his post, Betzmann criticized Pakistanis for raising their voice for Palestine. He said, “Stop feeling guilty for others when you’re littering your own country, not helping your own people and community”.
The post, of course, met with intense backlash, with some people resorting to using foul language in Betzmann’s inbox, one of which he shared a screenshot of. While the original message was much too foul to quote, Betzmann’s reply read like an offhanded insult at Pakistan.
“Works so well. The difference in doing and praying… hence the reason third world countries are based on prayers, and first world countries are based on doers,” he added.
The news of Nasir calling off her engagement with the German YouTuber comes in after his controversial and insensitive take on the matter.
