Ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in Lahore and sentenced to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts. Local media channels said on Saturday.
After months of trials, Lahore High Court has announced the verdict, and it’s been circulating all over the internet.
“Judge Humayun Dilawar announced that involvement in corrupt practices has been proven,” Pakistan TV said.
Imran Khan Arrested In Lahore
The 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was accused of misusing his premiership minister from 2018 to 2022 to buy and sell gifts in state possession. The gifts were received during visits abroad and were worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).
Khan was not in court for the hearing, but the Reuters news agency reported that his lawyer confirmed the news.
Rejecting Khan’s petition seeking inadmissibility of the case, Judge Dilawar sentenced the former prime minister to three-year imprisonment.
Earlier this year, Imran Khan’s arrest warrant was issued, and the whole country faced chaos, especially at Zaman Park where police forces entered with full power to arrest Khan sahib.
Charges of Misdeclaration
“Charges of misdeclaration of assets have been proven against PTI chairman,” the Additional and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar mentioned in his judgment.
He then handed Khan three years in jail and a fine of Rs100,000 while issuing an arrest warrant for his immediate arrest.
Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had already filed an appeal in the country’s Supreme Court.
“It’s important to mention there was no chance given to present witnesses; neither was the time allotted to round up arguments,” a member of Khan’s legal team told AFP.
