Tesla’s X has officially entered the generative AI race with the launch of its first Chabot, “Grok,” currently in limited testing, in anticipation of a wider launch among X Premium+ subscribers in the future.
Earlier this year, Musk launched an AI company called “XAI”. A petition signed by Musk earlier this year called for a pause in AI model advancement to allow for shared safety protocols to be developed.
“I signed that letter knowing it would be futile,” the billionaire owner of X and Tesla Inc. posted on Sunday. “It’s just that I wanted to be on record as recommending a pause.”
In the U.K., tech leaders and academics debated the technology’s risks at the AI Safety Summit last week, following President Biden’s signing of an executive order for AI oversight.
Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, who warned last week that AI was “one of the biggest threats to humanity”, said the competitor to CHATGPT would be made available to premium subscribers on his X platform after testing.
Also, Musk revealed that Grok has access to X posts, which he owns, and has a penchant for sarcasm.

Musk posted a screengrab of his query to Grok asking for a “step-by-step” guide on how to make cocaine as an apparent example of Grok’s playful tone. The reply describes the steps, including “obtaining chemistry” and “establishing a clandestine laboratory”.
After the chatbot responds, it adds, “Just kidding!” Make sure you don’t actually try to make cocaine. It’s illegal, dangerous, and not something I would ever encourage.” A few days earlier, Elon also made a surprising proposal of $1 billion for Wikipedia to change its name to Dickipedia.
Musk further claimed on Thursday that artificial intelligence (AI), which is the name for computer systems that can carry out tasks often associated with intelligent individuals, will eventually replace all human occupations. “There will come a point where no jobs are needed,” he stated, addressing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
