Ever wondered, what happens if someone die in the holy month of Ramadan in 2022? This is the month of blessings, one of the most sacred months of Islam. A general perception is when a Muslim dies, he or she goes directly to Jannah (heaven). But, let’s find out what Islam says about the people dying in Ramadan Mubarak.
Guidance From Hadiths:
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hellfire are closed and the devils are chained. ahih Al Bukhari 1800, Sahih Muslim 1079
According to the above hadith, the gates of heaven are opened and hellfire is closed in the month of Ramadan. Hence, it indicates that those dying in Ramadan may go straight to the Jannah. However, it is not certain as there are mixed opinions between scholars.
As per some fatwas, it is said that those who die in the month of Ramadan can be safeguarded.
“We can deduce from this Hadith that the one who passes away in Ramadan, will be safeguarded from punishment by the grace of almighty Allah.” (fatawa Mahmudiyyah 1/630) (Ahsanul fatawa 4/208)
“A person who passes away in the state of fasting will enter paradise.” (fatawa Mahmudiyyah 1/631)
Al hadith – Al-Bukhaari and Muslim
There is a hadith in which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “seventy thousand people will enter Paradise without being brought to account or punished.” The hadith signifies some people will go to Jannah without giving answers to their deeds.
Here is the full hadith:
“It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The nations were shown to me and I saw a Prophet with a small band of followers, and a Prophet with one or two men with him, and a Prophet who had no one with him. Then I was shown a huge multitude and I thought they were my ummah, but it was said to me: This is Moosa (peace be upon him) and his people. But look at the horizon. So I looked and saw a huge multitude, and it was said to me: Look at the other horizon, and there was (another) huge multitude. And it was said to me: This is your ummah and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being brought to account or punished.” Then he got up and went into his house, and the people disputed about those who enter Paradise without being brought to account or being punished. Some of them said: Perhaps they are the ones who accompanied the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Some of them said: Perhaps they are the ones who were born in Islam and did not associate anything with Allaah. And they mentioned other things. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came out to them and said: “What are you disputing about?” They told him, and he said: “They are the ones who did not seek Ruqyah or believe in bird omens, and they put their trust in their Lord.” ‘‘Ukaashah ibn Mihsan stood up and said: Pray to Allaah to make me one of them. He said: “You will be one of them.” Another man stood up and said: Pray to Allaah to make me one of them. He said: ” ‘Ukaashah has beaten you to it.”
Al-Bukhaari, 5705; Muslim, 220
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didn’t say that among these 70 thousand would be those who pass away during Ramzan. The hadith says those who are the best of the believers, who achieved true ‘Imaan’ in the oneness of the Allah Almighty (Tawheed) are in the list of those 70 thousand. Furthermore, the hadith says those who do not associate partners with Allah Al-Mighty are amidst the 70 thousand. Therefore, there is no trace of those who are fasting comes in the list of 70 thousand people.
However, fasting is one of the cardinal tenants of Tawheed and the belief in the oneness of Allah Almighty. There is another hadith, which exhibits about virtues of fasting; the hadith also talks about death during Ramadan.
Hadith of Hudhayfah
It was Narrated by Imam Ahmadthat the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever says Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (there is no god but Allaah), seeking the Face of Allaah and that was his final action, will enter Paradise. Whoever fasts one day seeking the Face of Allaah and that was his final action, will enter Paradise. Whoever gives charity seeking the Face of Allaah and that was his final action will enter Paradise.”
22813, Hadith of Hudhayfah
As per the above mentioned hadith, “Whoever fasts one day seeking the Face of Allaah and that was his final action, will enter Paradise.”
Therefore, it clearly says those who die during fasting will go directly to paradise. However, considering the hadiths, Jannah will be for those who do righteous actions and firmly believe in the oneness of Allah. Those fasting with a pure heart for Allah as the hadith says, ”seeking the Face of Allah and that was his final action,” will go to Paradise.

The sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are certainly not for those who do not do the righteous deeds. The fatwa of Mahmudiyah says, “those who die in Ramadhan, will be safeguarded from punishment by the grace of Almighty Allah,” Fatwa ( 1/630). Thus, it can be deduced that the punishment relief is only till Ramadan as hell gates are closed only in Ramadan, and Paradise gates are open only in this scared month.
Indeed, the Ramzan is the month of blessing and mercy. But those who die in this holy month can only go to Jannah if they are righteous in their deeds and fully believe in the Allah Almighty. Follow the accurate Ramadan timings here.
