There continues to be controversy surrounding the host nation of the 2023 World Cup, India. On 19th November 2023, Australia defeated India by six wickets at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
Mitchell Marsh, the Australian all-rounder who rested his legs on the World Cup trophy in a viral photograph, came under scrutiny from India.
India’s Uttar Pradesh has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Mitchell Marsh. Pandit Keshav, an RTI activist, filed the complaint against the Australian all-rounder. As a result of India’s defeat in the final match, Marsh’s picture has offended the sentiments of numerous Indian fans.
Besides the FIR, Pandit Keshav sent a copy to Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, recommending that Mitchell Marsh be banned from participating in cricket within the country.
Mohammed Shami expressed displeasure with the gesture, stating that this is the trophy everyone strives for.
The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy,”
It is important to remember that this episode is not the only controversy during the World Cup. Zainab Abbas, a Pakistani, has encountered significant reaction in India as a result of some previous tweets that offended Indian emotions. When Muhammad Rizwan was accused of doing the Namaz (prayer) in the stadium, which was thought to be inappropriate, he too faced similar problems.
These kinds of things happen all the time in India. The nation has demonstrated a high level of intolerance, frequently objecting to and complaining about even small matters.
Given that India has no ownership rights whatsoever to the World Cup trophy, the FIR against Mitchell Marsh may be seen as a publicity stunt.
