The worldwide death toll due to the COVID-19 pandemic is surging. Doctors and nurses are on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis, treating waves of patients. But, surprisingly, there is a positive impact of the deadly virus also.
Climatology scientists are claiming that as more nations go into partial or complete lockdowns, the hole in the ozone layer is in recovery. With a drop in air pollution due to the closure of industries worldwide, the ozone layer is repairing and redirecting wind flows.
Subsequently, this has normalized weather in the southern hemisphere of the world, according to the University of Colorado Boulder’s study on climate change.
Ozone Layer’s doing well
Lead Author of the study Antara Banerjee claims that ever since China closed its industries, following lockdown, there has been a sufficient decrease in global pollution. And since people have been confined to their homes, the industries have been shut down, and the roads are steered clear of soot-producing vehicles. Consequently, this has resulted in the truncation of global warming levels.
Researchers involved in the study say that there were changing rainfall patterns and ocean currents. Following, the mid-latitude jet stream shifting towards the South Pole. Currently, results depict that the jet stream had stopped moving south. And at the same time, the ozone hole began healing.
“We term this a ‘pause’ because the poleward circulation trends might resume, stay flat, or reverse. It’s the tug of war between the opposing effects of ozone recovery and rising greenhouse gases that will determine future trends,” says Banerjee.
To procure the visual analyses of this, researchers have used a range of computer simulations.

The climatic situation over the years
Quite obviously, the activities of humans, for a certain time have been responsible for the depletion of Earth’s silver lining. Over the years, humans have been busy with the degradation of land, by cutting down forests, overgrazing their livestock, etc. Not to forget, the drastic skyrise in carbon footprint. Occurring mainly due to industries dumping heavy metals waste and emitting harmful oxides into the air.
In a nutshell, humans never gave a chance to Earth’s natural mechanism, that it may heal itself. However, on the brighter side, this Coronavirus lockdown has given our World the chance to heal naturally, which it has been longing for centuries.
Environmental experts enumerate that: “For the first time in decades, the environment seems to be recovering from the constant pollution. The air quality index has been substantially improving. Subsequently, this means our planet is breathing again after a very long time. Positive Signs.”
