A senior Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, has reached out to Pakistan for support in halting Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip. Addressing an event in Islamabad, Haniyeh praised Pakistan as a brave nation and urged its intervention, stating that resistance from Pakistan could potentially cease the cruelty inflicted by Israel. He emphasized the opposition to Israel among those following the Holy Quran and warned against diplomatic relations between Islamic countries and Israel, asserting it would severely damage the Palestinian cause.
Haniyeh justified Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel as an act of self-defense, claiming that it preempted Israel’s plans for permanent destruction. Expressing hope in Pakistan’s strength, Haniyeh suggested it could force Israel to retreat, noting high expectations from Pakistan among Palestinians. He labeled Jews as the biggest enemies of Muslims worldwide.

The ongoing conflict, triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack, has resulted in thousands of casualties and displaced residents in Gaza. UN human rights chief Volker Turk described the situation as “apocalyptic,” with a severe risk of both sides committing serious rights violations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of a potential collapse of the humanitarian system, urging a ceasefire in a letter to the Security Council.
